Why I love my hometown - Asansol

Although I was born in Calcutta (Kolkata now), I grew up in Asansol, a beautiful city called in Rarh in India. It is the second largest urban agglomeration in West Bengal and is an important mining and industrial center.

It is in Asansol subdivision located in Bardhaman District, in the western periphery of the state. It has a large work force, moderately high per capita income, educational establishments, good transport connections, several housing complexes, and land suitable for industry, institutions, transport and commerce.
Its hinterland is Bankura and Purulia districts and North Bengal, linked to parts of Orissa and Jharkhand states. Asansol is going to be upgraded to a Mega City soon. According to a report released by International Institute for Environment and Development, a UK-based policy research non-governmental body, Asansol is among the 11 Indian cities in the list of 100 fastest growing cities in the world with a rank of 42." "My School"

Asansol has given me the base of what I am today, may not be very successful but truly standing on my own feet. It has taught me to widen my horizons and dream big. The city with its colonial old world charm has been the heart of education in this coal belt with some really old schools such as Asansol Ramakrishna Mission, Dhadka NCL Vidyamandir, Domohani Kelejora High School, Umarani Gorai Mahilakalyan, Arunoday High School, Manimala Girls, Eastern Railways High School, Dyanand Anglo Vedic Higher Secondary School, St. Patrick's Higher Secondary School, St. Vincent's High and Technical School (MY School), Loreto Convent, Assembly of God Church School, Chelidanga High School, Subhaspalli Bidyaniketan and Burnpur Riverside School (BRS), DAV Public School, Asansol Collegiate School, India International School and Jaharmal Jalan Institution. Most of these schools are around 100 years old or more and has more area than the biggest schools in the metros. To add to these the city has multiple colleges and a prestigious Engineering college.

Asansol is a place of amazing scenic beauty. The lush green fields, the Nehru Park on the bank of the Damodar river, the Maithon and Panchet Dam, the Satapdi Park, the Kalyaneshwari temple adds to the beauty and charm of this place. The Rabindra Sadan near BNR More is one of the cultural heritages of the city.

People of Asansol are one of the most friendliest of all. With multiple cultures co-residing there is no communal differences. They celebrate Durga Puja, Christmas, Diwali and Id together. The city is never tired of its celebrations and there is no Indian festival that is not celebrated in Asansol and the people of all communities take part in them with equal fervour.

I shifted to Asansol as my father was employed with the Eastern Coalfields Limited and I got an admission to St. Vincents High and Technical School. The school was as big as its name. It just blew my small brain the first day I entered for admissions. I knew instantly this would be my school and it was for the next 11 years. During these days I made numerous friends starting from my classmates to the kids of every other staff (from teachers to sweepers to security). Thus I became one of the most loved and known about kid in the locality. My house was a stones throw away from the school and we could hear the old school bell from the British era from our house. We had small groups in the locality with young guns like us competing every other day on some football or cricket match. Those days were one of my favorite days and those days in Asansol makes me hum one of my favorite songs,
